When should you hire a scaffolder?
You will need a scaffolder for most work at height — roof repairs and replacements, rendering or painting upper walls, chimney work and building projects. A proper scaffold is safer and quicker than ladders for anything but the smallest job.
How to choose a scaffolder
Look for membership of NASC (the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation) and scaffolders who hold CISRS cards (the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme) at the right grade for the work. Scaffolds should be inspected regularly — at least every seven days and after alterations or bad weather — and erected to TG20 standards. Always check public liability insurance.
What affects the cost
Scaffolding is usually priced per job and per week of hire, so get a written quote. Main factors:

Do I need scaffolding for roof work?
For most roof repairs and replacements, yes — it is safer and lets the roofer work efficiently. Very small jobs may be done from a tower or ladder, but a roofer will advise.
Do I need a licence for scaffolding on the pavement?
If the scaffold stands on a public pavement or road, the scaffolder normally needs a licence from the local council. A reputable firm will arrange this.
How long can scaffolding stay up?
As long as needed for the work, provided it is inspected regularly. Hire is usually charged by the week after an initial period.
