A boiler rarely fails without warning. Spotting the signs early lets you plan a replacement on your terms rather than during a cold snap. Here is what to look out for.

Your boiler is over 10 to 15 years old

Most boilers last around 10 to 15 years. An older boiler is less efficient, harder to get parts for, and more likely to break down. If yours is approaching that age, it is worth planning ahead.

Your energy bills keep creeping up

As boilers age they lose efficiency, so you pay more for the same heat. A modern A-rated condensing boiler can be significantly more efficient than an older model, which often shows up on your bills.

It keeps needing repairs

The odd repair is normal, but if you are calling an engineer several times a year, the cost can quickly approach that of a replacement — and a new boiler comes with a warranty.

Strange noises, leaks or dropping pressure

Banging, whistling or gurgling, water leaking around the boiler, or pressure that keeps dropping all point to a system under strain. Have these checked promptly by a Gas Safe engineer.

The flame is yellow instead of blue

A crisp blue flame is healthy. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and a possible carbon monoxide risk — turn the boiler off and call a Gas Safe engineer straight away.

It is slow to heat up, or radiators have cold spots

Slow heating and cold patches on radiators suggest an ageing or sludgy system. Sometimes a power flush helps, but on an old boiler it can be a sign that replacement is due.

Repair or replace?

As a rule of thumb, if the boiler is old, inefficient and the repair bill is a large share of a new boiler’s cost, replacement usually makes more sense. A Gas Safe engineer can advise honestly on the better value for your situation.
