How to choose a reliable local tradesperson

A practical guide to hiring with confidence — from first enquiry to final payment.

Finding a good tradesperson doesn’t have to be stressful. A little preparation and a few sensible checks go a long way towards a smooth job, a fair price and work you’re happy with. Here’s how to choose well.

1. Start with a clear brief

Before you contact anyone, write down exactly what you need doing, any deadlines, and any constraints such as budget or access. A clear brief helps tradespeople give accurate quotes and makes it easier to compare like with like.

2. Check qualifications and insurance

Ask what qualifications and accreditations the tradesperson holds, and whether they carry public liability insurance. For gas work, they should be Gas Safe registered; for electrical work, registered with a scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. Don’t be shy about asking — reputable trades expect it.

3. Look at reviews and previous work

Read reviews, and where possible ask to see photos of similar completed jobs or speak to a recent customer. Consistent, specific feedback is more telling than a single glowing review.

4. Get more than one written quote

Aim for two or three written quotes so you can compare price and scope. A good quote breaks down what’s included, what isn’t, and the materials involved. Be wary of quotes that are far cheaper than the rest — they often signal corners being cut or extras added later.

Tip: A written quote is different from a rough estimate. Ask for a quote you can hold the tradesperson to, and make sure it’s clear whether VAT is included.

5. Understand payment terms

Avoid paying large sums upfront. For bigger jobs, a modest deposit followed by staged payments tied to progress is normal. Agree the payment schedule in writing before work starts, and keep records of what you pay.

6. Watch for warning signs

Take extra care if a tradesperson pressures you to decide quickly, asks for a large cash payment upfront, won’t provide a written quote or references, or is reluctant to share insurance details. Trust your instincts — if something feels off, keep looking.

7. Questions worth asking

  • Are you insured, and can I see proof?
  • What qualifications or accreditations do you hold?
  • Can I see examples of similar work?
  • What’s included in the quote, and what could add to the cost?
  • What are the payment terms?
  • Do you offer any guarantee on the work?
